Overview

Hastelloy C-2000 (UNS N06200 / W.Nr. 2.4675) is a versatile nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy with a deliberate addition of copper. It was developed to expand the applicability of the C-family by adding resistance to sulfuric acid while maintaining the excellent resistance to hydrochloric acid and other reducing chemicals typical of Hastelloy C-276. The alloy resists both oxidizing and reducing media, and offers outstanding thermal stability. C-2000 is widely used in chemical processing, pharmaceutical production, and pollution control equipment where process streams may shift between acidic and oxidizing conditions.

Corrosion Resistance

Hastelloy C-2000 offers a distinctive corrosion resistance profile that makes it suitable for demanding service environments. The specific performance characteristics depend on the alloy's chromium, molybdenum, and other alloying additions.

  • Sulfuric Acid: Hastelloy C-2000 exhibits excellent resistance to sulfuric acid across a broad concentration range, from dilute to concentrated. The copper addition significantly improves performance in sulfuric acid compared to C-276 and C-22.
  • Hydrochloric Acid: Good resistance to hydrochloric acid at moderate concentrations and temperatures. Performance is superior to many stainless steels and comparable to other C-family alloys.
  • Phosphoric & Hydrofluoric Acids: Resists phosphoric acid in food-grade and industrial concentrations. Also performs well in hydrofluoric acid environments encountered in pickling and chemical processing.
  • Oxidizing & Reducing Media: The balanced Cr-Mo-Cu composition provides resistance to both oxidizing and reducing acids, making it suitable for processes with fluctuating chemistry.
  • Chloride Pitting & Crevice Corrosion: High molybdenum and chromium contents provide excellent resistance to chloride-induced pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking.
  • Oxidation Resistance: Forms a protective oxide scale that resists oxidation in air and flue gases up to about 1093 °C, though the alloy is primarily selected for aqueous corrosion service.
  • Mixed Acid Environments: Performs well in mixed acid streams containing sulfuric, nitric, and hydrochloric acids, such as those found in pickling operations and chemical synthesis.
  • Halide Environments: Resists corrosion in environments containing chlorides, fluorides, and bromides, including brine, seawater, and acidic brine solutions.
  • Wet Process Phosphoric Acid: Widely used in wet process phosphoric acid production where chloride and fluoride impurities attack lesser alloys.
  • Organic Acids: Good resistance to organic acids such as acetic, formic, and citric acids, including in the presence of chlorides.

Applications

The combination of high-temperature strength, corrosion resistance, and structural reliability makes Hastelloy C-2000 a preferred material across several critical industries:

  • Chemical Processing: Reactors, distillation columns, heat exchangers, and piping systems handling sulfuric, hydrochloric, and mixed acids.
  • Pharmaceutical Production: Vessels, crystallizers, and transfer lines where product purity and corrosion resistance are critical.
  • Pollution Control: Scrubbers, stack liners, and quench systems in flue gas desulfurization and waste incineration plants.
  • Pulp & Paper: Digesters, bleach washers, and chemical recovery equipment exposed to chlorine compounds and sulfuric acid.
  • Oil & Gas: Downhole and surface equipment handling sour gas, acid gas, and corrosive completion fluids.
  • Power Generation: FGD absorbers, reheaters, and ducting in coal-fired power plants.
  • Metal Pickling: Acid pickling tanks, heating coils, and acid recovery systems.
  • Food & Beverage: Heat exchangers and processing equipment where both organic acids and chlorides are present.
