Overview

Hastelloy G-30 (UNS N06030 / W.Nr. 2.4603) is a high-chromium nickel-iron-molybdenum-copper alloy specifically developed for the fertilizer industry and other applications involving aggressive phosphoric acid environments. With a chromium content of 28-31.5% — among the highest of any nickel alloy — G-30 offers outstanding resistance to oxidizing acids including phosphoric, nitric, and sulfuric acids, as well as excellent performance in mixed acid environments where both oxidizing and reducing conditions exist simultaneously.

The defining metallurgical feature of Hastelloy G-30 is its unique balance of high chromium for oxidizing acid resistance, combined with molybdenum, tungsten, and copper for reducing acid and localized corrosion resistance. This dual capability makes it uniquely suited for wet-process phosphoric acid (WPA) production, where the acid contains not only H₃PO₄ but also hydrofluoric acid, hydrochloric acid, and fluoride impurities that attack conventional stainless steels and even many nickel alloys.

Unlike the Hastelloy C-family alloys that excel in reducing environments, or the B-family alloys optimized for hydrochloric acid, G-30 occupies a specialized niche where oxidizing acids predominate but reducing acid contaminants are also present. Its high iron content (13-17%) reduces raw material cost compared to high-nickel alloys, while its performance in phosphoric acid service is superior to stainless steels, Alloy 20, and Hastelloy G-3.

Mechanical Properties at Room Temperature

Corrosion Resistance in Phosphoric Acid & Mixed Environments

Hastelloy G-30 was specifically developed to resist the complex corrosive conditions found in wet-process phosphoric acid production and other mixed acid environments. Its performance in these demanding applications is superior to stainless steels, Alloy 20, and even Hastelloy G-3.

Phosphoric Acid Resistance

Wet-process phosphoric acid (WPA) is produced by reacting phosphate rock with sulfuric acid, resulting in phosphoric acid contaminated with hydrofluoric acid, hydrochloric acid, fluoride ions, and chloride ions. These impurities make WPA far more corrosive than pure phosphoric acid. Hastelloy G-30's high chromium content provides excellent resistance to the oxidizing phosphoric acid, while molybdenum and copper address the reducing acid contaminants. In commercial WPA containing fluoride and chloride, G-30 typically exhibits corrosion rates 5-10 times lower than Type 316L stainless steel and significantly lower than Hastelloy G-3.

Sulfuric Acid Resistance

Hastelloy G-30 offers good resistance to sulfuric acid across a wide concentration range, particularly in the medium-to-high concentration range where oxidizing conditions prevail. The copper addition (1-2.4%) enhances resistance to sulfuric acid, an effect well-known in copper-bearing nickel alloys. However, for strongly reducing sulfuric acid environments, Hastelloy C-276 or B-3 may be preferred.

Nitric Acid Resistance

The exceptionally high chromium content (28-31.5%) gives Hastelloy G-30 outstanding resistance to nitric acid at all concentrations up to the boiling point. This performance approaches that of high-silicon stainless steels and titanium in nitric acid service, while offering far superior resistance to the reducing acid contaminants often present in mixed acid streams.

Mixed Acid Resistance

In mixed acid environments containing combinations of phosphoric, sulfuric, nitric, and hydrochloric acids — common in chemical processing and fertilizer production — Hastelloy G-30 offers a unique combination of oxidizing and reducing acid resistance. Its balanced chemistry ensures that neither oxidizing nor reducing components cause catastrophic attack.

Welding & Fabrication

Hastelloy G-30 has excellent weldability by gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW/TIG), gas metal arc welding (GMAW/MIG), and shielded metal arc welding (SMAW). Its austenitic structure and moderate work-hardening rate make it more fabricable than many high-nickel alloys.

  • No preheat required for most section thicknesses. Interpass temperature should be kept below 150°C.
  • Matching filler metal such as ERNiCrMo-11 (GTAW/GMAW) or ENiCrMo-11 (SMAW) is recommended for joining G-30 to itself.
  • Dissimilar welds to austenitic stainless steels or other nickel alloys can be made with ERNiCrMo-3 (Inconel 625) or ERNiCrMo-4 (Hastelloy C-276) filler, depending on the service environment.
  • Post-weld heat treatment is generally not required for corrosion resistance. Solution annealing at 1100-1150°C may be performed to restore ductility after severe cold forming.
  • Hot forming is performed at 950-1200°C. The alloy has good hot ductility and can be bent, forged, and rolled using conventional equipment.
  • Cold forming is readily performed in the annealed condition. Moderate cold work hardening occurs; intermediate annealing may be required for severe forming.
  • Machining requires rigid setups, sharp carbide or high-speed steel tools, moderate speeds, and generous coolant.
